November 28, 2021

The Manchester Volunteer Fire Department would like to announce with deep regret, the passing of life member and financial secretary Gary Eppley.

After serving 48 years, Gary was the current financial secretary for the department along with being a county and state delegate for the respective conventions. He was also on the county budget committee. Starting as a riding member taking his respective classes, through the years he served in the capacity of president, vice president, assistant chief, and financial secretary. With all of these things he has done through the years he was placed in the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association hall of fame in 2018.

Through the years if you came to Manchester for the play, carnival, saw santa on the fire engine or attended the events you most likely had the opportunity to see Gary. Serving as a comedian/actor, pizza maker, cashier, server, or a firefighter/driver just helping in any way he could making everyone laugh with a witty joke, or serving you a slice of hot pizza. Importantly santa on the fire engine riding through town has been organized by him over years, seeing everyone else made him happy doing it. Gary was a servant to the town that he lived in his entire life.

As a firefighter he served as a driver, drivers trainer, firefighter, and previously as an IV tech and assistant chief. Through the years he was a teacher for many learning to drive, would drive apparatus over to class for the younger members, was on many apparatus committees for apparatus being built over the years, and was a dependable driver for many years. One of his prouder moments as a driver and member was the opportunity for him to drive both of his sons on each of their first calls, along with the occasional crew of Gary with just both his sons.

Funeral arrangements and viewing information will be given when available, we appreciate the thoughts and prayers received during this time. Please keep his family and fire department family in your thoughts at this time.
